Matthew Hartley has a game called Kraken, inspired by the man against sea monster scene in Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea
Miniatures Rules
Expanding Space Hulk
Game Workshop’s Space Hulk game is one of the best it’s every produced. Every game is fraught with tension, as the marines attempt to maximize their scarce action points in the face of an increasing onslaught of genestealers. With good players, this game is nearly always a near run thing. Unfortunately, like so many of their efforts, the Evil Empire hasn’t continued to support it. Expanding The Hulk is a website dedicated to continuing the Space Hulk game. It’s got rules for using many of the other races in the Games Workshop universe, including Chaos, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Necrons, and Orcs.
Event Horizon Starship Combat Rules
Event Horizon is a set of free wargames rules for quick play starship combat. It is played on a grid board.
Charles Grant’s Battle Rules
Charles Grant, one of the Fathers of Wargaming, had his “Battle” rule serialized in Meccano Magazine between May 1968 and December 1970. The magazine ceased publishing in 1980, and the company has put its contents into the public domain. You can find all the contents on the Meccano Website.
The Meccano company was established in 1908 by Frank Hornby to distribute model toys and kids produced by the company. It produced the Meccano, Hornby Trans and Dinky Toys line. The company was taken over by Lines Brothers in 1964.
The pages with the rules themselves are below in pdf format:
Fires of Space Rules
Fires of Space is a space combat game with a WWII naval flavor. From the author’s introduction:
Here is my take on battles between big ships in space. This rules set has a deliberately 20th century naval warfare flavor, but with adaptations for space and far future technology. Included are the rules, tables, designer’s notes, a series of ships from various space navies, scenarios, a probability table for 20 sided dice, counters, and a 50 by 50 hex map. With the map are marked map sections showing showing the map’s center hex and deployment areas for tactical scenarios. Ideally, the game is played with two 50 by 50 hex maps: one for operational movement and the other for tactical engagements. In a pinch, a single map can double as both the operational and tactical map. Finally, I include a copy of the Excel workbook that I used to create the ships in the game.
