Sahibs and Sepoys Indian Mutiny Rules

Sahibs and Sepoys is a set of free miniatures rules for the Indian Mutiny of 1857 – 1858. Author Alan Hamilton writes:

These skirmish rules are intended for the small actions which were typical of the Indian Mutiny. Thus individual characteristics are very important. The basic Unit is that commanded by a named character who is usually of Lieutenant, Captain or equivalent rank.

The suggested figure scale for rank and file is about 1:6 to 1:10 with 1:8 a good average. This scale is not used for named characters who are 1:1. This is justified in the attitude of the period. They are, therefore, cast in a heroic mould. The unit strength was calculated inbayonets or sabres the officers, sergeants, drummers and so on being extra to this establishment. Thus a company at its full strength of 100 bayonets would be an Officer, drummer, sergeant or strong man (optional) and 8 to 18 rank and file; cavalry squadrons similarly have an Officer, bugler and 4 to 9 rank and file. The Rank and File can include a proportion of Corporals, Naiks etc.

To A Pulp Simple Rules For Pulp Gaming

Mike Fischer offers a set of miniature rules called To A Pulp (nice pun). He writes

Pulp gaming, in which each player controls a character or faction from a 1930’s pulp thriller, is growing in popularity. Such games combine the visual appeal of miniatures gaming with aspects of role-playing games, allowing the players to control the actions of tough private eyes, seemingly-helpless dames, brave explorers, and all the rest. I wrote these rules mostly for my own amusement.

The rules are made for simplicity and fast play. The game is meant for use with miniatures, but you can download a set of paper minis for free (see Section XI). All you have to provide is a few six-sided (d6) and ten-sided (d10) dice. The game is meant for two or more players, but it can be used for solo gaming as well.

Eureka Miniatures offers And All For One, a set of free miniatures rules for playing swashbuckling miniatures games such as the Three Musketeers. The four page rules set is done in an interesting flow-chart style, making it very easy to follow.

Sword and Dagger Medieval Skirmish Rules

“Herkybird” offers a set of medieval skirmish rules based, in part on an older rules set called Retinue.

Combat Action Wargames System

Combat Action is a very complete universal wargames system by Fabio Fontana. He writes:

Combat Action is a strategy game of small scale conflicts. It can be used to represent skirmishes with a dozen models per side up to larger conflicts with multiple squads, vehicles and support weapons. The system presented within this book comprises two levels of detail, a simple system for small scale games where each model on the battlefield is a separate unit, and a more complex layer which adds optional rules to govern targeting, simulate chain of command and allow larger engagement of forces.

The point system will allow you to design any creature, vehicle or model you like, and field any model you create on the battlefield.

The site also has playscreens, scenarios and a complete world background.
