The First Indochina War was fought from 1946 to 1954. The Colonial war involved the French Union's French Far East Expeditionary Corps which was led by France and supported by Emperor Bảo Đại's Vietnamese National Army against 2) the Viet Minh, led by Ho Chi Minh and Vo Nguyen Giap. That conflict effectively ended with the defeat of French forces at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu.

The Second Indochina War -- more commonly known as the Vietnam War, lasted from 1955 to 1975. Still viewed as a colonial war of liberation by the North Vietnamese, it also was a proxy war between democratic and communist nations. The Democracies were led by the United States, and South Vietnam, supported by Australia, Thailand, New Zealand, the Khmer Republic, the Kingdom of Laos, the Philippines, Taiwan, Canada, West Germany, the United Kingdom, Iran and Spain. The Communist forces included North Vietnam, the Viet Cong, Khmer Rouge and Pathet Lao who were supported by the Soviet Union, China, Cuba, North Korea, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria and East Germany. US and Allied participation effectively ended in 1973. The war ended with the fall of the South Vietnamese capital, Saigon, in 1975.
